Water Management Unit

The Water Management Unit (WMU) is to supply water to LUSIP water users in order to advance their economic development goals while preserving the asset value of the bulk infrastructure in a participatory approach. Formed in 2011, the unit ensures that GoKe assets under ESWADE are operated and maintained as per the operations and maintenance manual. This includes dams, canals, pipelines, pump stations and potable water systems. Other responsibilities entail abstracting water from the Usuthu system and impounding the Lubovane Reservoir as per the INCOMAPTO Agreement and Tripartite Permanent Technical Committee system rules; releasing compensation and sanitary flows, supplying water to LUSIP water users for both irrigation and domestic use; accounting for all water used and lost, ensuring the dam is safe to itself and public through analyzing data from monitoring instruments and sharing information to stakeholders in order to ensure their involvement in managing the system. All interventions are based on Integrated Water Resources Management principles. The Unit is post-project and ensures that ESWADE assets are preserved after project closure. The current asset base under the Unit is E3.5 billion.
